How to Prepare for a Neutral Family Discussion

How to Prepare for a Neutral Family Discussion

Short answer: Preparation for a neutral online family discussion is about identifying the topics you want to address, deciding what respectful participation looks like, and understanding the mediator’s limited role. It is not a substitute for legal, financial, therapeutic, or other professional advice.

Start with the conversation, not a legal position

Consider the practical topics you would like to discuss and the questions you want to raise. The purpose of preparation is to help you participate clearly and respectfully; it is not to ask the mediator to decide what the law requires or what either participant should do.

Identify your priorities

  • What would make the conversation productive for you?
  • Which topics need time and attention?
  • What information do you need from the other participant to understand the discussion?
  • What would help you communicate calmly and listen fully?

Plan for voluntary participation

A neutral process depends on each participant being able to choose freely whether to participate. If you have concerns about safety, coercion, abuse, or an urgent need for protection, mediation may not be appropriate. This practice does not assess emergencies or provide crisis assistance through this website.

Set up for an online session

  • Choose a setting where you can participate without interruption.
  • Use a device and connection that let you hear and speak comfortably.
  • Arrange enough time to participate without rushing.
  • Ask process questions before the session if anything is unclear.

Keep the mediator’s role clear

Remote Family Mediation provides a neutral process only. The mediator does not represent either participant; give legal advice or legal analysis; determine legal rights, obligations, remedies, or a legal forum; Each participant should obtain independent advice from a lawyer qualified in every relevant jurisdiction before acting on a decision or written document.

Please do not send confidential information, documents, court papers, or a narrative of a dispute through this website.
